Australia Day Parade
Buderim Bowls Club was well
represented in the Australia Day Parade by the Bowls Queensland promotional
trailer and a vibrant group of stalwart bowlers led by Major Barry "Hawkeye"
Hawthorne.

sociable sport at our next open day. Sponsored by Buderim Newsagency. Games, prizes, lucky draw and free sausage sizzle. Bowls provided. Flat
soled shoes required. If you missed out last

Visit to Solander Lakes Bowls Club, Bribie
Island,
Sunday
1 February for lunch and bowls. A full coach load of men and women bowlers had a
very hot but enjoyable day. A reciprocal visit to Buderim is planned for later
in the year. There are also plans to make this an annual event with a perpetual
trophy.
Super Challenge
Once again the club competed in the Super
Challenge competition with five side wins and 21 rink wins from its nine
encounters with other clubs.
Night Challenge
The men and ladies have combined again to play in the
Sunshine Coast District Night Challenge competition.
Ladies Fiesta Day
A most enjoyable day. Winners were
Beryl Cayless, Agnes Williamson, Myra Cooper and Alma Smith. Runners-up were
Jill Barrett, Hedy Sanderson, Topsy Plaisted and Helene Harris.
Friday 19 March from 6 p.m. brought a twinkle to the eye as we donned the green and celebrated with dining,
dancing and Irish music and entertainment by the redoubtable Ken O'Flaherty. Be
sure to see a report in the Buderim Chronicle. A special treat was a stirring
performance by the students of the Noosa School of Irish Dance. Prizes were
awarded for the best Irish outfits (Muriel and Wilf Fudge) and the best Irish

Urangan Trip
A coach full of keen bowlers travelled to Urangan on the weekend of 3rd and 4th April. After dinner at the
Urangan Bowls Club on Saturday night they played a game on the indoor green
under lights and the roof. The coach returned after another game on Sunday
morning. Should Buderim have a similar facility?
Ladies' Friendship Day
On 6 April. This is the day when the
ladies invite a friend from another club to come along and enjoy the day with
them.
Shirts Vs Skirts
This fiercely contested annual event
between the men and the ladies took place at 1 p.m. on Friday 16 April
followed by the regular bistro at 6 p.m. and lucky prize draw at 6:30 p.m. The
men made up for last year's defeat by winning 269 to 170 overall. Prizes
for best performed men's team went to Doug Hollands, Ron Murray, Jim Rossow and
Glen King (skip) and best women's team Josie Cassidy, Pat Spence and Nora
Marshall (skip). A good crowd of 104 stayed for the bistro, with the membership
draw jackpotting to next week as the winner was not in attendance.
Ladies Pennants
The Sunshine Coast District ladies pennant
competition started on Monday 19 April. Good bowling ladies!
Corporate
Bowls Challenge- Sunday 2nd May 1-4 p.m.
Buderim businesses entered teams of three players plus a bowls club member for a fun afternoon of bowls and a drink
and barbecue dinner. No experience was required, but some good performances were
turned in. Prizes worth over $360 plus a winners
trophy were awarded. The winner's prize and trophy were awarded to the team from
Ray White Real Estate. Congratulations! Runners up were the team from Bank of
Queensland and third prize went to the Manawee Plant Nursery team. The twenty
teams and their families and supporters all enjoyed a great social afternoon.
There were many keen to challenge again at the next
Corporate Challenge in
September.

Interstate Challenge
A challenging new
State-of-Origin style series between mixed teams with origins in Queensland, New
South Wales, Victoria and elsewhere (the Nomads). To be played on the third
Fridays of May, June and July.
Stan Poole Memorial Day
A well-attended afternoon of mixed
triples was sponsored by Maureen Poole on Wednesday 2 June in memory of her late
husband Stan Poole, a popular playing member of the Club. Winners of the day
were the team of Di Austin, Ivan Stanton and Jack Farrelly.
Interstate Challenge
The second Interstate Challenge was played on Friday 18 June, followed by the regular Friday bistro.
The Nomads beat the Vics and the Queenslanders beat the NSW Blues in
near-perfect conditions. This format has created great interest and competition.
Wynnum-Manly War Vets
Wynnum-Manly War Vets visited the club on Sunday 27 June for lunch, bowls and
afternoon tea. All enjoyed a very successful afternoon of mixed fours and
triples.
Financial Seminar
At 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday 7 July, our
sponsor Damien O'Rourke from Enstil Financial Strategies provided a free
breakfast and financial seminar. A large group of members received an excellent
account of coming changes to taxation laws and worthwhile investment strategies.
Christmas in July A full house enjoyed
the revelry of
Christmas in July on Friday 9 July at
6 p.m. A three course meal, entertainment by an entertaining duo, Face 2 Face,
and dancing, all for $15. The food and service were of a high standard and many
revellers enjoyed the dancing. See the Christmas in

Ladies President's Day A highly successful day. Members
welcomed President Elaine of SCDLBA and her executive and were very pleased to
have Patroness and Life Member Sylvia Robson back.
Interstate Challenge
The third Interstate Challenge on
Friday 16 July resulted in wins to Queensland over Victoria and the Nomads
over NSW. The series results ended in a narrow win for Queensland, with the
Nomads only a few shots short of victory. Victoria was third, with NSW
looking at plenty of practice or a recruiting drive for next year.
Final results were: Queensland 3 +70,
Nomads 2 +67, Victoria 1 -31, NSW 0 -106.
Winter Carnival
Buderim is hosting several Sunshine Coast
Winter Carnival events during July and August: Mixed Pairs 27 July, Men's Fours
31 July, Mixed Triples 4 August, Men's Pairs 7 August, Men's singles 10 August.
Visiting Clubs
Queensland Meat Traders Social Bowls
Club will visit for lunch, bowls and afternoon tea on 8 August. Other interested
clubs are invited to contact the
Secretary.
Men's Pennants
Men's pennant sides are entered in
Divisions 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, to compete in the expanded Sunshine Coast District
between 21 August and 23 October.
State of Origin
The annual State of Origin match
between mixed teams with origins from Queensland and elsewhere will be expanded
to a series of three matches this year to be played on 27 August, 24 September
and 22 October. The first contest was won by a Queensland team reinforced by
Victorian visitors.
Junior Bowls
Our junior team from Sunshine Coast
Grammar School, after some effective initial coaching, has won both its matches.
It is hoped that other schools will join the competition next year.
Corporate
Bowls Challenge
The second Corporate Bowls Challenge for
2004 was held on Sunday 12 September at 1 p.m. No experience was necessary,
but coaching was provided before and during the games for novice bowlers. Twenty
six teams from local businesses took part. It looked a little like skittles on
some rinks, but all enjoyed the games and the sit-down BBQ dinner afterwards.
Winners on the day were the team from Manawee Garden Centre, with Fuss Law
second and Buderim Chronicle and Bunning's Hardware tied for third. See also the results of the

State of Origin 2
Once again Queensland won the second
State of Origin match with the help of some imports, this time with a convincing
score of 192 to 169. Prize winners for biggest margin (21) were Janet Godfrey,
Brian Quigley, Pat Spence and Helene Harris representing The Rest. Winners for
Queensland with a margin of 14 were Gary Boyes, Val Lipscombe, Topsy Plaisted
and Jack Farrelly. Runners up for The Rest were Cathy Quigley, Marilyn Field,
Dave Colvin and Vaughan Isaac and for Queensland Yvonne Hawthorne, Myrle
Eldershaw, Peter Bryden and Hugh Mackay. There was a third match on Friday
22 October for
the Queenslanders to try for a clean sweep.
Bloomhill Cancer Help
Charity Day On Wednesday 6 October the ladies sponsored an afternoon of mixed two-bowl triples with funds raised to go to the Bloomhill Cancer Help centre. All players
were asked to support this worthy
cause.
President Pam's Trophy Day Tuesday 19 October was a re-run of
the President's Trophy Day for the ladies. Good weather was ordered this
time.
Men's Pennants
The First Division side was
undefeated in its section, but lost in the inter-sectional playoff in somewhat
controversial circumstances. Third, fourth, fifth and sixth divisions all
performed well without winning a pennant.
Melbourne Cup Day
Tuesday 2 November was a special Melbourne Cup Day, with mixed bowls at 10
a.m. followed by lunch at 1 p.m. Dress for the day was smart casual or bowls
uniform with bowls shoes to be worn on the green. Trophy winners were drawn.
Cost was $10 including lunch and Cup broadcast. A prize was given for the
person wearing the colours of the winning jockey. The usual sweeps were held.
Annual Christmas Party
On Friday 10 December in 2004.
A traditional Christmas dinner with all the
spirit of Christmas, decorations, entertainment and loads of festive fun.
Santa was a big attraction. Another full house enjoyed the evening, entertained
by Rum 'n Roses.
Night Bowls Night bowls under the new lights is now
well under way with night pennants and social bowls. The front green will be out
for maintenance during the Christmas period, but night bowls will resume in
January.
